Professional Trailer Parts Factory- How to manufacture Trailer Leaf Springs

Leaf springs are part of semi trailers' suspension system.

The function of leaf springs is to connect the frame and axle in the form of a suspension to withstand the load impact of the wheel on the frame. Leaf springs flex to resist impacts, reduce the impact of the vehicle body, and ensure a smooth ride.

Here’s general process of manufacturing semi trailer leaf springs: Blanking→Drilling→Rolling and cutting→Calibration→First rolling lug→End grinding→Quenching→Tempering→Shot peening→ Flaw Detection→ Painting→ Testing.

The sheets of the multi-leaf springs are prepared by cutting and stamping while the parabolic sheets are hot rolled in a specially designed rolling machine. The ends of the main sheet are heated and the eyes are then hot rolled. The sheets are heated and bent individually to the correct arc radius and, while still clamped between the bending tool, each sheet is dipped in oil to receive high strength and correct shape. Parabolic sheets also have an arc radius but are however normally straight in the thickest central section. The sheets are finally tempered for high toughness and strength.

After cooling, shot blasting process is necessary for all parabolic sheets. However, for multi-leaf springs, usually only the two safety-critical leaves require shot peening. The bushes are driven into the eyes and the pile of leaves is assembled. Positive stresses are then introduced into the spring through a prestressing process.

Multi-leaf surfaces are protected against corrosion by painting the exterior surfaces and by lubricating between each leaf. Parabolic sheets are individually painted on all surfaces.
